With a vow to support Holroyd Council in its fight to stay independent in light of a mooted merger with Parramatta and Auburn councils, Mr Perry said Merrylands was set to become a major CBD in the next 15 years.
“Any merger would be a backward step for Holroyd,” Mr Perry said. Mr Perry said councils had to be about local government rather than big businesses.
A semi-retired businessman, Mr Perry was elected unopposed to the position of chamber president on February 16.
In fact, all the positions were unopposed, despite the chamber growing in numbers from 37 to 50 in the past in the past year.
Outgoing president Mariya Gojan, who is now vice president, told the meeting there had been some successful events over the year which had drawn more interest in the chamber.
They included a business breakfast with finance whizz John Symonds, business after five events and the small business awards.
Holroyd councillor and former mayor John Brodie shared Mr Perry’s vision for Holroyd, particularly the planned revitalisation of Merrylands.
“Like other great cities of the world, Merrylands will have people living in the CBD, revitalising and making it safer,” Clr Brodie said at the meeting. “Merrylands has the opportunity of being our jewel.”
