From 20-22 November, a high-five zone was set-up at Civic Plaza Blacktown and passers-by were encouraged to simply stand in front of an interactive screen and give a high-five to someone else in the community.
The interactive screen captured every high-five and for each one, five dollars was donated to one of 15 local community groups. Over the course of the three days, 17,129 of high fives were given.
The event was part of NRMA Insurance’s Good ‘Hoods program, which aims to create community connection and resilience.
NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Phil Lockyer said: “We know people living in connected and resilient communities are stronger, safer and more confident. They help each other grow in good times and equally, help each other recover when times are tough.
“That’s why we encouraged the local Blacktown community to connect with each other and support these organisations that help to build resilience in the community,” Mr Lockyer said.
The 15 local organisations that took part in the event included Africa United Rugby League Limited (a group that promotes community and belonging through rugby league),
Common Groundz (a not-for-profit community café) and Blacktown Youth Services Association (a social impact organisation, dedicated to nurturing young people and creating social change in the community).
Each organisation was selected because of their focus on building a more connected community.
NRMA Insurance Good Hoods Blacktown launched in 2016. Through the program, NRMA partners directly with local groups to find, support and grow community-led initiatives which help build resilience to specific local challenges.
