Real value of women’s network groups

WOMEN’S networking groups are popping up everywhere to satisfy the increasing need of women who are starting or running a business or want to enhance their careers.

I have been to quite a few of these networking events and can see a common thread across all of them. Women are joining forces to do it ‘for themselves’.

But is this really happening? Can women succeed without men?

Let me preface this by saying there is an enormous amount of quality information shared among talented business professionals who run and attend these events.

Women’s networking groups exist as a support mechanism for women in business. Although women join with the expectation that this is ALL they need to make it in business.

Women therefore isolate themselves from the men in a male dominated world (business) and hope they will succeed.

It is time women are realistic. Isolate yourself from men then you isolate yourself from the main players in business - the decision makers.

Obviously the male dominated business world needs convincing that having a woman in an executive position is required, although this will only happen if you deal with men, not just other women.

Why can’t women be women and men be men? Let’s face it. Men were created first. Why do women have such a hard time accepting this fact?

I am often asked by women what the secret is in dealing with “men” in business. Simply put, I just say they are human.

Although, there are a few key points I would suggest taking into consideration if you ever decide to venture outside the comfort zone of women’s groups and head out into the boys club.

1.Don’t be emotional. Most men aren’t that interested in your break up, headache or sick child. They are there to do business.

2.Keep it to the point. If you take too long to get to the point, they will think you have no point. Of course, if they want to talk, let them.

3.Men like being men and for women to be women. That is, don’t dominate or intimidate. Be firm and strategic but don’t emasculate.

4.Be a woman. Easiest thing to do is be you; in a ‘man’s world’ women can be a refreshing change to a meeting or company, take advantage of it.
