Council says farewell to Stephen after 39 years

HILLS Council has paid tribute to outgoing employee Stephen Barrett, who is retiring after giving 39 years of service to The Hills Shire.

Council’s general manager, Dave Walker said it was extremely rare to hold on to an employee for 39 years, let alone someone who showed the dedication and commitment that Stephen had.

“Stephen really is one of those rare people. He has worked so hard for so long, with a good attitude and outstanding commitment,” Mr Walker said.

“I wish him and his family all the best for the future and I will sincerely miss him and his dedication.”

Stephen was employed by Council in 1974 and has worked in a variety of roles throughout his 39 years.

“I was 18 when I first started here. Things were very different back then,” Stephen said.

“I’ve done plenty of different jobs in that time. I started off on a jackhammer, I’ve driven water carts, worked with hot mix and lately I’ve been doing things like picking up litter and working down at the nursery.”

Stephen said he’s always been happy to come to work, where he’s made many friends over the years.
