Local venues show their spirit

SHOWING strong community commitment, Western Sydney clubs were well-represented on the winners’ dais at the recent NSW Clubs NSW Awards.

Castle Hill RSL Group President Warren Glenny won the Outstanding Contribution to the Club Industry Award for his on-going passion for the industry and his drive to make both the Hills District and Parramatta a better place for future generations.

Mr Kenny not only has been patron of a wide variety of community and sporting programs but has helped build membership of the group’s clubs - that includes Parramatta and Pitt Town RSLs - from 18,500 to 50,000 and employment has increased from 155 to 550 staff.

In addition, as a result of his tireless work, financial support for charities and community groups have also grown from $246,000 to $1.05 million – an increase of a staggering 328 per cent.

Castle Hill RSL CEO David O’Neil said that Mr Kenny was “a remarkable man and has the utmost respect of all that know and work with him”.

Blacktown Workers Club took out the top prize for Best Club Contribution to Welfare and Social Inclusion for leading the way when it comes to stamping out violence against women.

The club has undertaken several steps to raise awareness of the horror of domestic violence, including becoming a recognised White Ribbon workplace and General Manager Neale Vaughan being appointed as a White Ribbon Ambassador.

Richmond Club won the Highly Commended Award in the Welfare & Social Inclusion category for their commitment supporting the community through aged care.

The Richmond Club’s Hawkesbury Living Cameron Cottage is a specialised memory care wing for people who suffer from dementia and is the first of its kind for the Hawkesbury.

Bankstown Sports Club and Wests Ashfield beat stiff competition to take out two of the top prizes at the Awards.

Bankstown Sports Club won the award for Outstanding Regional Initiative for their support of Little Wings – a charity that flies terminally ill children from regional and rural NSW to Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Wests Ashfield took home the top award in the Best Club Contribution to Youth category for their Community Citizenship Awards, which support and recognise local students.

Each year the Club invites schools within a 5km radius to nominate either a team or an individual for each award category.

The Lantern Club and Dooleys Lidcombe Catholic Club also took home Highly Commended Awards for their support of community education.
