The development is aimed at creating a modern, vibrant City Centre, supporting an expected 5,000 new local dwellings. The wide-range of works, funded by S94 developer contributions, will include:
- A new public parking area, south of Merrylands Road, for up to 875 cars;
- The extension and widening of Main Lane
- Public Domain upgrades of streets, laneways and pavements;
- New lighting and landscaping throughout the CBD;
- Improved stormwater infrastructure to reduce flooding risks.
Mayor Greg Cummings said a new City Square, covering 2,800 square metres, will be the cornerstone of the Merrylands City Centre Revitalisation Project.
“The City Square will be the heartbeat of Merrylands, creating a unique open space, where people who live, work and visit the City can meet, relax and interact,” Mayor Cummings said.
“In addition, it will provide easier connections to local bus and train interchanges and better manage the overall flow of vehicles and pedestrians throughout the City Centre.”
Mayor Cummings said the existing Council car park in McFarlane Street will be transformed into a mixed-use development, featuring retail, commercial, and residential property.
“We want to give Merrylands a fresh new look which is consistent right across the City Centre, whilst providing the community with the crucial infrastructure that is required to meet the ongoing needs of Merrylands’s growing population over the next 15-20 years,” Mayor Cummings said.
“The revitalisation plan will also see us unlock the development potential of Council’s existing car park at 28-36 McFarlane Street, transforming it into an exciting mix of retail, commercial and residential property, right next door to the new City Square.”
The new development in the CBD has resulted from Council’s Local Environmental Planning (LEP) Policy and Development Control Plan 2013 and aligned with the State
Government’s plan to address growth and housing demand in the Greater Metropolitan Sydney.
He said the revitalisation program will deliver almost 5,000 new dwellings in Merrylands.
“Council will begin its consultation and engagement with the community in relation to the revitalisation projects, including the new City Square and Main Lane, later this
year.”
