In what is believed to be the first time in Australia a public water company is partnering with a major sporting team – the NSW Blues.
Last year Cricket NSW players consumed almost 9000 bottles of sports drinks and bottled water during their matches and training.
The partnership with Sydney Water will mean that this season the NSW cricketers overall will consume 61,000 less teaspoons of sugar contained in the sports drinks they drank last year.
To burn off these 61,000 teaspoons of sugar would require the equivalent of one person walking over 24,000 kilometres – almost twice the distance around Australia.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sydney Water as the new hydration partner of Cricket NSW and our elite teams, said Cricket NSW’s general manager of commercial and events, Brett Richardson.
“As the hydration partner of the NSW Blues, Lendlease Breakers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, Sydney Water will showcase Sydney’s tap water as the most healthy, affordable and sustainable choice for Sydneysiders and sportspeople alike,” said the Minister for Primary Industries, Lands and Water, Niall Blair.
Added benefits include well over 9000 plastic bottles won’t be entering the waste stream, where they take over 1000 years to biodegrade and over 6000 kilowatt hours of energy and almost 13,500 litres of water will be saved in not manufacturing these 9000 plastic bottles.
