Jobs growth in Hills

THE Sydney Hills has a labour force of almost 102,000 - according to a report by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations released in June 2012.

Of these, 4,749 people - or just 4.7 per cent - are currently looking for work. These figures are lower than both the national and state averages, with Sydney’s unemployment rate at 5.1 per cent and Australia’s at 5.2 per cent.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, said this pleasing result showed that the Sydney Hills is a great place to locate a business.

“Clearly, we have many skilled and employable residents. I would like to encourage business owners from other parts of Sydney to consider expanding or locating their company to The Sydney Hills, taking advantage of our ready-made workforce,” she said.

“Reducing employees’ commute times leads to increases in staff retention – so companies locating here could enjoy increased loyalty and productivity from people looking for jobs closer to home,” she said.

“We have many examples of successful companies who have opened offices in places like Norwest Business Park that have not only retained key employees; they have grown their staff considerably.”

Mayor Byrne said that even though the unemployment rate is low, many residents still needed to travel out of the Shire for work.

“Around 60 per cent of residents commute to work, with many spending up to two hours or more per day travelling,” Mayor Byrne said.

“The arrival of the North West Rail will have a positive effect on the creation of more local jobs, and also make it easier for those commuting to work.”
