Health Infrastructure has awarded Sydney-based Multiplex the contract for the largest hospital redevelopment project in NSW – the Westmead Redevelopment project.
Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd plans to start early construction works in June with the main work scheduled to commence in September 2017; the opening date is 2020.
Westmead Hospital, opened in 1978, is a key part of Western Sydney Local Health District and part of one the largest health, research, and education precincts in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere
An objective of the project is to reinforce the precinct as a global flagship for health, research, education, training, commercial and community integration, and a major lever of economic stimulus.
Precinct partners are seeking opportunities to maximise the participation of Western Sydney local business to ensure that funding for this project is invested back into the community and stimulates the local economy.
Westmead produces more than $1.9B of economic output.
The Invest in Westmead report, which describes Westmead as a “magnet for capital”, states a total of $5.8B of investment is under various stages of delivery, planning, or with potential to be delivered as part of plans for Westmead over the next decade
The current project’s main works contract comprises a 12-storey acute services building.
This will connect Westmead Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and host a range of adult and paediatric services including emergency, pharmacy, imaging and state-of-the art operating suites.
A helipad will be located on the roof, a new entrance plaza and multi-storey public car park will be built as part of the project.
The University of Sydney will occupy one and a half floors of the new hospital building, aiming to increase the integration of education, research and health services delivery.
“Not only will [the building] it deliver much-needed improved medical services to Greater Western Sydney, but the project will also generate significant employment throughout its construction and beyond,” said David Ghannoum, regional managing director of Multiplex.
The new building is at the centre of two of the busiest hospitals in NSW and alongside world-class research institutes.
Dr Michael Brydon, chief executive of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead said emergency services in the new hospital building would rival the best in the world.
The new hospital building, which is expected to open in 2020, could generate 1500 construction jobs per year.
