POLICE UPDATE: WARNING ABOUT SCAMS

PARRAMATTA police would like to further remind the public that there are numerous scams currently in circulation and to exercise a high level of caution prior to transferring money, gift cards or iTunes cards to people online or over the phone. On the October 5, 2020 a 24-year-old woman has lost $1000 to unknown persons after being told she owed the money in unpaid Taxes. The caller had all the woman’s details so believed it to be legitimate. The woman was told police had an active warrant for her arrest and local police would be in contact with her soon. She was called by someone she believed to be police saying she had an outstanding warrant for unpaid taxes and the debt would have to be paid. A payment plan was devised for the woman which would involve her purchasing $1000 worth of iTunes gift cards and sending them to a mobile number. The woman has done this and after speaking with her family realised it was a scam.
