PROFILE: Sebel the perfect haven for a break

By Di Bartok

The Sebel Hawkesbury Retreat and Spa is the place for that perfect break.

This iconic property is a four and half star hotel with the works: comfortable rooms, a day spa, access to an adjacent 18-hole course, indoor heated pool, two tennis courts, gym and kids’ playground, as well as two restaurants and bar.

And, while there is enough to keep people among the splendour of Sebel, there also are plenty of attractions in the nearby town, with markets, heritage attractions and antique shops.

As you would expect, locals and people further afield find the Sebel as the perfect weekend getaway- particularly couples wanting a retreat from family and work lives.

But it also is a good place for families, with children enjoying the play facilities while their parents relax.

Many people come to enjoy the facilities without staying, but it would be difficult to pull yourself away from this picturesque retreat after only a day visit.

With its sprawling gardens, weddings are a big part of the business as are business conferences.

Running this wonderful retreat is David Ross who started at the Sebel four and half years ago.

Working an average 60 hours a week, Mr Ross, 44, regards the Sebel as his home away from home - not that he is complaining.

“I’m proud of this place, with the industry and community awards we win, and watching people enjoy themselves,” Mr Ross said.

The hotel currently has 16 treatment rooms and will soon have a new treatment room extension.

“We are preparing for the World Polo Competition, to be held in Ebenezer in October 2017 with guests from around the world staying with us.”

Mr Ross has been in hospitality for 28 years and knows that good staff make his job easier.

“Since I have been here, we have increased the staff from 87 to 130,” he said.

“We also employ people with special needs from Nova Employment, indigenous employees and also offer work experience.”

Finding the 105-room hotel gives him the perfect work-life balance, Mr Ross is not in a hurry to move on to another property.
