Joining them for the Nepean Triathlon at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on 25 and 26 October will be six members of the 2014 Australian Commonwealth Games team, along with almost 2000 domestic and international competitors who have registered to take part.
The chance to visit Penrith and compete in the oldest triathlon in Australia was a huge draw card for Steve Waugh, but the former Australian cricket captain said his main focus will be to support and encourage his friend and idol.
“I’ve known John MacLean for over a decade now and I still marvel at his amazing attitude and enthusiasm to confront each and every challenge with 100% commitment. So when he invited me to join him in Penrith for the Nepean Triathlon I immediately felt compelled to be a part of this adventure,” he said.
Penrith Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler said it was a privilege to be able to support a local event that encourages people to dream big, work hard and achieve their goals.
“Council is a proud sponsor of this event and a huge supporter of John Maclean. John is a great ambassador for Penrith and an example to us all that goals and dreams are attainable despite the barriers we may face. I’ll be cheering him and all the competitors along on the day,” Cr Fowler said.
The local community can show their support by registering for ‘Walk the Talk’; a fundraising initiative of the John MacLean Foundation to support young people in wheelchairs.
Participants in ‘Walk the Talk’ will join John and the other sporting legends in the last 5kms of the 10km run/walk.
