Price wins NSW Open at Castle Hill Country Club

By Belinda Hill

ARON Price has won the 2013 Gloria Jean’s Coffees NSW Open Championship played at Castle Hill Country Club.

Starting the fourth round tied for the lead with PGA TOUR player Steven Bowditch, Price opened with a birdie before steady play saw him claim the title by four shots with a tournament total of 19-under 269.

“I finished off nine holes this morning and just played steady all day,’ said Price who had just one bogey for the tournament.

“A couple of times when I did get in trouble I made some great pars like on the 10th. Obviously I made four, if I had of made a five it could have spiraled into anything.”

Finishing four shots behind Price in a tie for second was WA Open champion Jack Wilson, Aaron Townsend and Adam Bland.

Price watched on as his playing partner Bowditch found trouble throughout the day; he finished on 4-over in the final round for a share of seventh on 13-under 275.

“I didn’t have too many challenges, I saw Adam coming and Steve had his ups and downs so I was just trying to play my own game,” added Price.

While Price picks up AU$16,500 and Official World Golf Rankings for his win he is most excited to have played his way into the Emirates Australian Open next week.

“It’s good to be playing next week,” added Price who before winning today would have been playing pre-qualifying tomorrow.

“It’s just like that song, I don’t like Mondays. Monday qualifying stinks, it was going to be 80 guys for three spots. I was pretty confident that I could play well but you never know in qualifiers.”

No stranger to victory Price won on the Web.com Tour in 2008 however this becomes his fist Professional title on home soil.

“This week I was more relaxed. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t have turned up if I didn’t want to win,” added Price who is a proud New South Welshman.

“I grew up playing in the NSW junior events and I caddied in this event 20 years ago. I have always remembered that so I would rather win the NSW Open then the Queensland or West Australian Open.”

23-year-old New South Welshman Callan O’Reilley finished as the low amateur with scores of 70, 70, 65 and 70 to be 13-under 275.

Fellow amateur Ben Eccles, from Torquay in Victoria, fired an impressive course record 10-under 62 in the final round. He finished the tournament on the same number in a share of 16th.
