Rackpace expects to expand

US-based global cloud computing and hosting company, Rackspace, expects to open a data centre, at Erskine Park, later this year employing 10 people and with plans a total of 50 employees within three years.

Australia and New Zealand country manager, Mark Randall, declined to comment on the size of the investment, but said the deal with data centre builder and manager Digital Realty was worth "many millions of dollars."

Mr Randall said Western Sydney was chosen as its climate would allow for “free air cooling” about 300 days a year, reducing the facility's energy consumption.

He said the company has a 10-year lease on the facility which will have 1.4 megawatts of power. Clients include Lonely Planet, Pacific Brands and Tourism Queensland. Hewlett-Packard opened its $200 million Aurora Data Centre at nearby Eastern Creek, in June this year..
