WHAT THE REGION THINKS

Perception an asset and a liability

By Michael Walls

BUSINESSES of all sizes identify perception of the Western Sydney region as one of their greatest benefits and greatest impediments.

This was a key finding of the bi-annual Making Western Sydney Greater report conducted by a group comprising accounting firm William Buck, Western Sydney University, St George Bank and the Western Sydney Business Connection.

While there are distinct advantages and challenges specific to Greater Western Sydney and its different subregions, Greg Travers, Director at William Buck said some businesses will identify a factor as a benefit and others will identify the same factor as a problem.

Public transport infrastructure and access to major roads and infrastructure are two examples of this; suggesting that part of the investment being made into these types of infrastructure is paying dividends for some businesses, while other areas are lagging behind which is impacting on businesses located there.

The key message from the research was that business outlook remained positive for the region; outperforming the rest of NSW, and Australia as a whole.

Another important message from the research was around business growth with 90% of large and SME businesses identified business growth as an objective for the next 12 months.

Of the businesses surveyed, 22% do not believe that University graduates are job ready, whilst 11% do not believe that VET (including TAFE) graduates are job ready.
